Happy Independence Day & Iced Sugar Cookies

Happy Pakistan Independence Day!

May Allah bless our nation, may all our dreams come true, may our nation shine bright

Today & always!

Long Live Pakistan!

A sugar cookie is a cookie made from butter, sugar, flour, eggs, vanilla and baking powder or baking soda. Sugar cookies can be made by hand or rolled and cut into shapes. They can be decorated with Icing, frosting, colored sugar or sprinkles. Easy to make & perfect to decorate!

Made these cookies few days back, just before Ramadan. I used green & white colors for Icing, keeping the colors of Pakistani flag in mind. Just made a small batch, using 1/4th of the original recipe. The dough was little sticky, so chilled at least an hour to firm up the dough & worked with a quarter of the dough at a time. Sorry for my poor Icing skills, but they tastes delicious  :)

Iced Sugar Cookies

Recipe by Jill Saunders at allrecipes

* Prep. Time : 20 minutes
* Cook Time : 8 minutes
* Makes : 24 - 30 cookies, depending on the size & thickness of the cookies

Ingredients :
  • 1/4 cup and 2 tbsp. butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/8 tsp. salt
 Method :
  • In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth.
  • Beat in egg and vanilla.
  • Stir in the flour, baking powder and salt.
  • Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour or overnight ( Make sure to chill the dough as the dough is slightly sticky ).
  • Preheat oven to 400 F / 200 C.
  • Roll out dough on a lightly floured surface ( or between two sheets of plastic wrap ) until it is 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick.
  • Cut into desired shapes with cookie cutters.
  • Place cookies 1 inch apart on a paper lined cookie sheet.
  • If you don't want Icing on the cookies, you can sprinkle colored or sparkling sugar on the unbaked cookies.
  • Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven, remove from oven when edges just begin to brown.
  • Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. Make sure the cookies have completely cooled before Icing.

For Icing :
************
From bakingsheet

  • 1 cup Icing / confectioners sugar, divided
  • 2 tbsp. milk, divided
  • 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract, divided
  • Few drops of food coloring
  • Place 1/2 cup of sugar in 2 small bowls. Add milk, vanilla and a few drops of your desired food color to each bowl.
  • Mix thoroughly with a fork, until smooth and a good consistency: thin for filling in large spaces and thick for making clear lines. Add extra milk if necessary.
  • Scrape each color into a small zip-lock plastic bag.
  • Snip the corner of the bag to ice cookies.
  • Working with 1 cookie at a time, pipe Icing over cookie.
  • Let stand on a wire rack until set.

  30. WOW now those are really... what can I say... great looking cookies :o)!

I love the way you decorated them, lime green is an awesome color Masha-Allah :)

one remark about celebrating independence days... I don't think there should be any kind of national day celebration in Islam since all of us Muslims in reality belong to one... group or clan... we're all brothers and sisters in Islam :)

I myself don't really celebrate the Philippine independence day... heck I don't even know when the Indepence Day of Philippine is... because of the fact that Muslims have only two celebrations namely Eid Al Adha and Eid Al Fitr.

Just some advice from a Muslimah who cares about Allah's Orders being obeyed insha-Allah :)

would like to get to know you more insha-Allah Ambreen; back in Saudi I've had many Pakistani friends, acquaintances and neighbours.

anyway Ramadan Mubarak insha-Allah and advance Eid Mubarak, also thank you for the comment on one of my blog entries sister in Islam :)

    wasalaam
